Many thanks to Martin Wade who has supplied the following information. A brief history: Caupona was built at Woodnutts on the Isle of Wight in 1939 as Vertue No.8, one of the few with no doghouse and a keel stepped mast. I don't know where she was kept during the war, but she was bought by Ben Tilman from West Mersea just after the war and sailed up from the south coast. He never fitted out very early and never sailed very far. About 1949 she passed to Mr & Mrs Lewin in West Mersea who sailed extensively to Holland and did a twelve week cruise around the Baltic. Martin & Anthea Wade owned Caupona between 1973 and 1985 and kept her at West Mersea, where she cruised the East Coast and Holland. In 1985 she went to an owner in Chichester harbour. In 2003 she was bought by Philip Mitchen of Totnes and is kept in excellent condition on the River Dart. Martin |
