 Vertue Rally at Poole

(Reprinted from Yachting Monthly August 1952)

The first Vertue class rally was held at the Poole Harbour Yacht Club at the end of June 1952.

After two days racing in glorious weather, a number of the boats entered the Marina Dock of the Poole Harbour Yacht for the Concourse d’Elagance seen here being judged for all round performance, equipment, and condition by three eminent yachtsmen; Mr. George R Gill of (Laurent Giles & Partners who designed the boat), Mr. Percy Woodcock a well-known yachting journalist, and Capt L W. Cox MC. owner of the 14 ton Gauntlet Pegasa.

The results of the two days’ racing were:

   Results of the Concourse d’Elagance

1st                                                   Hussar Mr. Frank Webster

2nd Gay Vertue                                 Mr. Dc Baxter

3rd Bettine Jnr                                Lieut- Col Ormonde Darby O.B.E

The Vertue. Class yacht is sturdily built 5-tonner very popular for cruising and racing. Designed by Laurent Giles and Partners of which fifty-three have already been built and Venue XXXV has been sailed across the Atlantic by Mr. Humphrey Barton two years ago.

The rally was a great success and it is expected that next year it will become a national event.

The Concourse d’Elagance an excellent innovation and would be a worthwhile introduction to all sailing regattas to find the most well found yacht in the many and various classes. And would prove very popular both to cruising and racing owners alike,

To round off a most successful and extraordinarily well organized rally. Lieut-CoI. M. Ormonde Darby. Commodore of the Poole Harbour Yacht Club was elected first Chairman of the Venue Association, which was formed as a result of the rally.
