FOREWORD by Peter Woolass

The main purpose of this little book is to gather together existing shreds of information which, over long years, have been written and said about the 'Vertue'. This is supported by up-to-date notes. statistics and facts thought to be of interest to all who own, sail. or aspire to this famous class.

David Jackson-Smith, energetic Secretary of the Vertue Owners' Association first raised the possibility of such a publication when we met at the Boat Show in London in January 1973. Since then much research and collecting of information has been undertaken. and I should like to acknowledge the tremendous help I have received from many sources, some of which are listed on the preceding page. The venture is intended to be non-profit making. This intention may well turn out to be the under-statement of the year! Whatever the financial outcome, writing and editing the book has, for me, been a satisfying and informative experience. It could, in fact, be described as a labour of love. I hope it shows.
To those of us fortunate enough to own 'Vertues' I can only trust that the following pages are useful and interesting. To those who are about to become owners I would say this -"You are joining a privileged group by buying this thoroughbred little ship. She will make great demands upon you right from the start. But if you cherish her she will repay you a hundredfold. On your travels you will frequently be amongst larger, more modern and more expensive boats. But your 'Vertue' will everywhere command interest and respect out of all proportion to her size and value because of her achievements. If you can add to those achievements you will be worthy of her. Good sailing!"

Let us all thank our lucky stars, and Jack Giles, for our beloved 'Vertue'.

P.W.
